And this year's Buddha is FUGEN-BOSATSU (Samantabhadra).
FUGEN-BOSATSU is one of Bodhisattva.
FUGEN means perfectly wise person. FUGEN rides on White Elephant normally.
According to Buddhism sutra, Fugen-Bosatsu relieves women from suffering. So Fugen is popular Bodhisttva among women.
Generally, Fugen exists next to Shaka-Nyorai (Gautama Siddhartha).

This habit has been began since Edo period. Pilgrims go to seven (or more) places (Incl. Shintoism shrine and Buddhism temples).

There are two religions mainly in Japan. One is Buddhism, another is Shinto.
Shinto have existed before Buddhism came from foreign.
Shinto is polytheism.

Buddhism have no God, and Shinto is polytheism. But a part of both religions
were mixed peacefully. Because both are tolerant religions.

Thus ancient people had idea like below.
"Japanese gods
and goddesses are incarnation of Buddha."
For that reason, they accepted
both religions naturally. This idea is also living among present Japanese
people. I mean, it's natural thing that believing two religions as Japanese
people.

The Seven Deities of Good Fortune is seven gods of good fortune in Japanese myth and folklore.
It is the set of Buddhsim, Japanese myth, Chinese Taoism and
Hinduism.

Seven Gods are;

Hotei, the fat and happy god of abundance and good health

Jurojin, god of longevity

Fukurokuju, god of happiness, wealth and longevity

Bishamonten, god of warriors

Benzaiten, goddess of knowledge, art and beauty, especially music

Daikokuten, god of wealth, commerce and trade.

Ebisu, god of fishers or merchants.

(See also this web page)
Blue Lion normally.
Japanese proverb says "Sannin Yoreba Monju no Chie"
(Monju's wisdom is equal to three human being's.)
which means "without by

Dec. 31st reach the peak.
In Buddhism temple, JOYA-no-KANE, Buddhism rites, will be carried out.
JOYA... is the rites that banging the bell 108 times.
Buddhism is saying that human being have 108 desires.
JOYA... blows these desires off on the last day.
And we're gonna meet the new year.

Generally, we are allowed to bang the bell till around 100 times.
And the rest is banged by Buddhism priest.

At Chi-On-IN temple in Kyoto, as the bell is too much big,
Buddhism priests bang 108 times like an acrobat (the most famous Joya-no-Kane)
Though many Japanese couples are celebrating a wedding, the ceremony is Christian-like (mimicry of the Christian ceremony).
Actually, Japanese Christian are 1% of population.

Well, isn't there Japanese traditional wedding?
No, we have two types of wedding ceremony. One is Japanese Shintoism ceremony, and other is Buddhism one.

However, these ceremonies have short histories. Because these ceremonies influenced by Christian's one.

Originally, Japanese had had not wedding ceremony except Imperial family.

When common people hold a wedding ceremony, they used to hold it at their
house.
The ceremony was called "SHUGEN". It means celebration banquet.

Though Christianity had been forbidden for long times, Meiji government (1868 - 1912) removed the ban about that.
After that, many christian cultures are introduced to Japan, Shinto and Buddhism have created a wedding ceremonies.

But Buddhism wedding ceremony is seldom held.
Because Buddhism is not attach much importance to wedding ceremony itself.

If you have an opportunity of visiting to Japan, please go to Shinto shrine (Jinja). You maybe can see Shinto wedding.
It's Buddhist lucky charm.
It's NOT Hakenkreuz (Nazi Germany's swastika symbol mark).

Please look it carefully.
You will find that its directions are difference.

Nazi's swastika is left-turning.
Buddhism's one is right-turning.

Originally, both mark was used as lucky charm among Hinduism.
Buddhists are using right-turnig swastika only as lucky charm and symbol
of vitality.

At Zenko-ji temple. You can see the Buddhist Manji.

Buddhism have the code "Hendan Uken".
When Buddhism monks put on uniform for the rites, they conceal left arm and open right arm (shoulder).
This style stands for respect, non-aggressive attitude and the energy of vitality.

H.H. 14th Dalai Lama's wear(tibetan style) & Japanese style.

So, right-turning swastika is lucky mark as Buddhist.

However, many Europeans and Americans are confusing Buddhism Manji with Nazi's swastika since Nazi adopted left-turning swastika.
For that reason, Buddhist and Hindu are difficult to use swastika in Europe.

Frankly speaking, Buddhists are annoyed by European's simplism on swastika.
Though I'm in favor of denying Nazi, please distinguish between right-turning from left-turning.

On October, Gods and Goddesses are gone
Japanese have polytheism, so many gods and goddesses are existing.
(On the contrary, new god are born still now also)

October says to Kannaduki in old Japanese. It means No Gods month.
Gods and Goddesses gather to hold a conference at Izumo in what is now
Izumo Taisha Shrine at Shimane pref.

On Oct. many gods and goddesses gather at there.

Therefore, No God month except Izumo area.
Generally, it's said that they're talking over our marriages, but nobody
knows.

The chairperson is Amaterasu Omikami (goddess).
Artisan's name is Mukoyoshi Yuboku. He is an inheritor of Kei-ha.
www.tokyotrad.com/mukoyoshi.html

Kei-ha is one of Buddhism art schools that began at Kamakura era (12th century). Unkei and Kaikei are historical representative craftsmen. They had changed the world of Buddhism sculpture dramatically. As they are mentioned on Japanese history textbook, many Japanese people know them.

His works is so sophisticated!
Actually, you can see his works at Buddhism temples and Museum. It's super high-rank Buddhism art.

His works will stay to many generations!!

This combination is just like a Japan!!
The first of all, please see this picture.

This combination is just like a Japan!!
There are two religions mainly in Japan. One is Buddhism, another is Shinto.
Shinto have existed before Buddhism was introduced from foreign. Shinto is polytheism.

Buddhism have no God, and Shinto is polytheism. So, a part of both religions
were mixed peacefully. Because both are tolerant religions.

Thus ancient people had idea like below.
"Japanese gods and goddesses are incarnation of Buddha."
For that reason, they received both religions naturally. This idea is also
living among present Japanese people. I mean, it's natural that believing
        two religions as Japanese people.

Kannon is strange figure. I can't judge the name of this Kannon (Senju
or Juntei). And Kannon have traces of repair.
Yashiro (miniature shrine) is good condition.

This set was made in Showa. It's regarded as personal product.
Because of old item, please allow that it's having a little damage and
        stain. Please recognize it.

I'm taking part in NPO, Made In Japan Project as director.
From that reason, I'm having direct deal with some craftsmen of Japanese culture and selling their items.

Do you know Maiko-san?
You can meet them, if you visit to Kyoto. MAIKO is traditional, female Japanese entertainers whose skills include performing various Japanese arts such as classical music and dance. Maiko is an apprentice of Geisha.
It's called OBON.
It have tendency to decrease religious character in these days, but it's traditional event.

On Aug. 12th, Japanese Buddhists go to family's grave, and burn Manchurian Wild Rice. This action is called MUKAEBI which means invitation fire. Ancestors come back to descendants with the help of smoke.

Around August 15th, BON ODORI hold. BON ODORI is one of dance festival as memorial service.

On Aug. 16th, descendants burn Manchurian Wild Rice again beside grave. It's called OKURIBI which means escort fire. Ancestors go to dead person's wolrd again.
GOZAN OKURIBI at Kyoto is very famous.

In OBON, descendants make horse and cow with eight sticks, eggplant and cucumber.
Descendants want to let ancestors come back fast by horse, and go back slowly by cow.

From that reason, road and train are jammed because many families go back to their hometown. Conversely, Tokyo is to silent city.

Generally, OBON is August event except Tokyo (hold it on July).
Almost businesses are stopped because many people go back to their hometown. From that reason, people from Tokyo hold on July.

As BON ODORI, Owara is the most famous at Toyama.

As OKURI-BI, GOZAN OKURIBI is the most famous at Kyoto. It's describing character with fire on mountain.

///癒しフェアから仏教への話題の転換がすり替えに近い印象を与えるかもしれないが、これとは違うコンベンションだったけど、埼玉の秩父の方のお坊さんがこういうのに近い性格のイベントに出ているという話を聞いたことがあった（その人とは面識はないけど）。仏法と身近に接してもらう機会になると思われたのだろうか。もちろんそこで勧誘するわけではないし、そんなにディープな仏教の話をしているわけでもない。ただきっかけ作りとして考えていたのでは？と推察する。

Japanese consideration of death and life (3)
Every dead person can be reborn in any case (I heard that way of life is affected by the sin or karma of the former world. But we can be a rich or a poor depending on own effort.). Anyway, maybe you and me were friend in the former world.
This idea is called En (Yen).

This coin is Japanese 5 yen.
Pronunciation of '5 yen' is 'go en' in Japanese.
'go yen' is a homophone with go-en, a word for karma, fate, relation and encounter.
As a result, sometimes this coin is used as a token of meeting.

Japanese have words, "Sode Fure Au mo Tasho no En".
Meaning :
Even if relationship of only touching clothes between each other, it was related to something each other in the former world.

We also have "Ichigo Ichie"
Meaning :
Meeting in this world is maybe the first and the last, so we have to make much of the meeting.

You may meet your family and your partner at the next world. Your pet may become your friend as human being at the next world.
(I feel that Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo child is influenced by the transmigration of the soul. He said that "If I don't meet you no more in this world, then I'll meet ya on the next one. Don't be late." I wonder Jimi's mother-in-law is a Japanese-American???)

Japanese people are delighted with non memory meeting at the former world,
sharing suffering at this world, and they die as having wishes to meet
at the next world. Of cource, the best thing is no rebirth as Buddhism
ideas.

The areas that staying the thought of the transmigration of the soul strongly
are Tibet and Japan.
Rikudo of Buddhism is an idea based on the transmigration of the soul,
it's six worlds in which dead person is reborn next.　These worlds are considered
as parallel exist.

But we shouldn't rebirth.
Essential teachings of Buddhism are "to live is to experience many
sufferings".
I mean, "Not to rebirth after death" is the most happiest thing. It's called GEDATSU, it means "leave from the transmigration of the soul".
Because only "No rebirth" can avoid from sufferings.

The six worlds are:
Ten-do, Ningen-do, Shura-do, Chikusho-do, Gaki-do and Jigoku-do.

Dead person is put on trial by Enma Daioh. He indicates to let dead person go to one of six worlds based on past actions.
(If Enma judged that "needless to rebirth", dead person goes to Gokuraku Jodo. I mean, he/she enters Nirvana (become a Buddha). )

1. Ten-do
is fortunate world that sufferings are smaller than human being.

2. Ningen-do
Ningen means human being. That is Ningen-do is the world of human being. There is many sufferings in this world, but sometimes they can feel happiness.

3. Shura-do
is the world of endless conflict, struggle, quarrel. And here are many sufferings and rage. But all causes are due to oneself. That's why they suffer more.

4. Chikusho-do
is the world of animals. Because of they live by instinct only, they can't understand the teaching of Buddha by oneself. That's why it's the world of a less salvation

5. Gaki-do
is the world of starvation and thirst. If they ate something, they would be in flames. It's said that the world that a person who didn't feel for others goes to.

6. Jigoku-do
is the world that an evil persons goes to. That is to say, it's the hell.
The first of all, for the purpose that it doesn't make them retort, Enma
Daioh removes their tongue. And they are sent to the hell. They can't speak
words, all they can do is screaming.
There are ONI who are a horrible watch of the hell. Evil persons have to accept severe punishment from ONI. For example, swimming at blood sea, climbing to needle mountain, sleeping on hot plate, dragging by car and so on.
They need to endure a long long time. At last Enma Daioh permits them to be reborn.

Next :
I will write about words from the transmigration of the soul.
Here comes the Buddhism event called OBON soon.
So I will put down about Japanese considerations of death and life.

The main current religions of Japan are Shinto and Buddhism.
Both religions have long history, almost parts of thought have been mixed.
Some years ago, the movie, Departures won the Academy Award for Best Foreign
Language Film.
This film expressed Japanese consideration of death and life.

Approx. 90% of Japanese are Buddhist.
In Japanese Buddhism, the bereaved family give the white clothes to dead person and give Rokumonsen.
(white clothes is called Shinishozoku which means clothes for dead person, Rokumonsen means six coins).

And it make him/her put into coffin, and cremate it.

This costume is traveler's in Edo period. white version is for dead person only.
Dead person travels from this world to the world after death.

Attention when you put KIMONO on.
Don't wear left side cloth on your body. It's called HIDARIMAE, this way of wear is dead person only.

There is Sanzu river that flows at border between this world and the world after death.
Dead person goes across Sanzu river by ship.
As it needs Rokumonsen to ride on the ship, dead person pays Rokumonsen at there.
An old woman who is called Datsueba exists at riverbank, she takes the clothes instead of Rokumonsen from dead person who has not the coins.

After crossing the river, dead person is put on trial by Enma Daioh at seven times every seven days.
Enma Daioh judges based on Enma-Cho (Enma's note) that is writing all actions of dead person.

Dead person gets conclusion after 49 days (the bereaved family put bones into graves after 49 days of his/her death)

Next :
I will write about Rikudo (six world) that Enma Daioh gives to dead person.

An onion on the roof
The photo is NIPPON BUDOKAN.
This structure was constructed for martial art (Budo like Judo, Kendo, Karate...).
However, this building have been also used as music hall since 1966.

The Beatles visited Japan, and they played in Budokan, 1966.
Since the Beatles played, many legendary musicians played there.
(Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck.....Oasis)

Playing in Budokan is first-class certificate as musician.

By the way, this onion is called GIBOSHI, it's decorative things as amulet. But we're calling an onion Tamanegi (as food)
You can see it at Buddhism temples, Shinto shrines and old bridges, if you visit to Japan.

at Buddhism Temple

at Shinto Shrine

Somedays ago, I went to Monzen-Nakamachi in Tokyo.
A purpose was to eat Fukagawa-meshi after a long time.

Fukagawa-meshi is food that using rice with short-necked clam since Edo period.
Originally, this food was fisherman's food in Edo period.

These maps are Monzen-Nakamachi.
above : Edo period (it's put present subway on the map)
below : Present Monzen-Nakamachi

Monzen-Nakamachi was near the sea at that time.
(Present Ecchu-jima Sta. was in the sea.)

Talking of Monzen-Nakamachi, we hit upon "Fukagawa Fudoson".
Fukagawa Fudoson was called Eitai-ji temple in Edo period.

Fudo Myo-Oh and other four Myo-ohs exist at the temple (SEE ALSO).
Originally, monk carried Narita's Fudo (near Narita International Airport) to Monzen-Nakamachi, this town was prosperous among common people in Edo period. The summer festival is famous still now.

Don't step on the threshold of Buddhism temple. We have to cross the threshold.
Japanese have word, it says "Shikii wo matagu (cross the threshold)".

If the scale of temple is large, threshold is also large and high.
So, it's hard to cross the threshold.

Japanese says that "Shikii ga Takai (threshold is high)".

From that reason, this word (Shikii ga Takai) became an idiomatic expression.
It means difficult problem, hard to overcome.

The world biggest copper Buddhism statue exists at Todai-ji temple in Nara.
Thresholds of Todai-ji are high and wide:)
250 years ago, Katsusika Hokusai, Woodblock print artist, was born at Sumida

Especially, leather craftsman is called "Sumida master". Dragon (snake shape) is imaginary animal in east Asia.

Dragon was the symbol of Chinese Emperor, it never allowed using this design by others including nations around China.
That is to say, China was the center for all things.

Accordingly, the Emperors of nations around China were sensitive to this, they settled that reducing the number of claws.
China : five claws (five fingers).
Korea : four claws (four fingers).
Japan : three claws (three fingers).

Of course, it have nothing to do with that at present, because Chinese Emperor had gone. (This tradition a little remains now.)
As Hinduism and Buddhism was born in India, a part of idols are objects of belief by both believers.

Following image is one of them.
It's called Ganesha by Hinduism.
Or it's called Kangi-Ten by Buddhism.

(Elephant head and human body.)

I went to Matsuchiyama Shoden temple.

In Buddhism, he is the symbol of happy married life, blessed with children, well-being of one's family and a brisk business.

His emblem is the crossed two radishes like a thigh shape.
I mean, happy married life means...
Do you know what I mean?:)
But it's serious problem as wife and husband that wish children.

(at Matsuchiyama-Shoden temple in Asakusa, Tokyo)

As a result, they will be blessed with children and well-being of their family. If they had wonderful life, they would work hard (a brisk business).
From that reason, he is the sign (symbol) of happiness.

But, as his character is a little sexual one, almost temples are not opening him to the public.

By the way, there is special sweets for Kangi-ten. It's called Seijoh-Kangi-Dan. It's the oldest sweets in Japan.
The only one Japanese sweets shop is making this sweets in Kyoto!!

I've ever eaten this. It's good taste!
May 5th is Children's Day in Japan.
Families which have boy display Koinobori on this day.
This day is boys day actually. On the other hand, girls day is March 3rd.

According to tradition of the East, if carp climbed waterfalls, they would become a dragon. That's why carp and dragon are symbol of success. In Japan, parents wish their child's success and decorate Koinobori.

And families which have boy also display Gogatsu-Ningyo.

This doll was given from my parents when I was born.

On this day, Japanese take a bath that floated iris. And we eat Kashiwa Mochi (traditional sweet, a rice cake wrapped up in an oak-leaf).

Originally, this customs is China's in 3rd century. Later, this customs was introduced into Japan from China. But Koinobori, Gogatsu-Ningyo and Kashiwa Mochi are Japanese original.
Yesterday, I went to private exhibition of Mikiya Yamaguchi.
He is a promising young Buddhism artisan. Already his works was bought
by some Buddhism temples.
He and I have reached agreement on dealing. If you have any questions,
please let me know.

By the way, this picture (two pictures below) are brand new his works.
AMIDA SANZON RAIGO.

According to Buddhism Sutra (Kammuryoju Kyo), when we died, Amida Nyorai comes
for us to take us to Gokuraku Jodo.
* Gokuraku Jodo (literal translation : extremely happy pure land. It's
close to Christian Heaven).

From that reason, AMIDA is believed in many people. Especially, ancient people believed that AMIDA take us to Gokuraku Jodo as riding on their clouds from far west.

AMIDA-SANZON-RAIGO were painted too much as expression of their imagination.(for example)

This time, Buddhism artisan, Mikiya Yamaguchi has expressed AMIDA-SANZON-RAIGO
as three-dimensional.
It's super sophisticated works!!

The timber is Kiso-Hinoki (Kiso Japanese cypress is the super high-rank
timber).
Production period is one year.
Price : 15,900.00 USD / 12,000.00 EUR (It's a little cheap price than generally market prices.)

AMIDA SANZON RAIGO (Amida and his attendants are coming)
Center : Amida Nyorai (Amitabha)
Right : Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta)
Left : Kannon Bosatsu (Guan Yin)

Three-dimensional expression.

TENUGUI - HIDDEN CHRISTIAN'S FUDOH MYO-OH

TENUGUI is often introduced to tools as hand towel, but actually TENUGUI is not
only hand towel but is tools that have various uses. For example, wrap

It is TENUGUI that not to sew up an edge tightly, but it would not become loose if you would wash it well.

It's desperate measure by persecuted Japanese Christians
From Toyotomi regime to Tokugawa shogunate (1590 - 1874), believing Christianity
was prohibited. Old Japanese Christian is called "Kirishitan".
Due to the regulations, Japanese Christian had camouflaged to believe.

Though it's Fudoh Myo-Oh of Buddhism image and the Sanskrit outwardly,
this Sanskrit has no meaning. In fact, it was letting 'J' of Jesus be Sanskrit-like
and it was blended to Fudoh.
Every around the vernal equinox (and the autumnal equinox) is called OHIGAN
in Buddhism.
HI means (over)there, far or beyond. GAN means shore.
I mean, OHIGAN means opposite side shore. Therefore it's the world of after
death.

In the Jodo faith of Buddhism, AMIDA NYORAI who meets dead person was believed
that he lives at the far west among people.
And the sun sets to due west on the vernal and the autumnal equinox.
That's why ancient people decided to carry out the Buddhism rites. So-called
it's Ohigan.
Many Japanese Buddhists are in the habit of going to their family grave.
Mar. 3rd is Hina-Matsuri (the girls day) in Japan.
Families which have girl display Hina-Ningyo (Hina dolls) on this day.
Families wish that the girl leads her healthy life.
(On the other hand, boys day is May 5th.)

The origin of Hina-Matsuri is unclear. But it is guessed that the nobility had begun it in Heian period (8 - 12th century).
In Edo period (17 - 19th century), this habit had spread for common people.

Hina-Matsuri have funny superstition like below.
"As soon as Hina-Matsuri finished, families have to put the dolls away. Or the girl won't be able to get married."

Originally, the day that the first Japanese Emperor, Jimmu acceded to the throne.
But as Emperor Jimmu is the Emperor in the mythological age, that has little historical ground.
According to Japanese oldest historical book "Nihonshoki", he became a Emperor on Jan. 1st in 2670 years ago (Feb. 11th in B.C. 660 - the solar calendar).
Sumo wrestler, Mongolian Asashoryu has quit his job because of his bad
manner.
He couldn't do "When in Roma, do as the Romans do".
He had been kept accusing about dignity of Yokozuna. But he couldn't reply
to sumo fans.

He said "When I'm on the dohyo ring, I need to become also a devil".

Anybody didn't blame about that.
Everybody expressed concern over his attitude outside dohyo ring.

-He played football in his home country, but he pretended to be ill, and
cut his job in Japan.
-He used abusive words to reporters or his opponent several times.
-He broke the rule; grabbing opponent's mage (topknot), attacking after
decided the game.
-He raised his clenched fist after won the game.
-He punched common people after drunk.

Sumo is not WWE. It seems that he didn't understand difference of both.
Anybody didn't want villain Sumo wrestler.

"Rei ni Hajimari, Rei ni Owaru.".
It means "beginning with bow, and finishing with bow".
Japanese martial art make much of courtesy. The roots is Bushido (Samurai's
ways or chivalry).
He couldn't do that (maybe he didn't know or forget about that).

Sumo has long long history.
In Edo era, Japan had social standing system. The top class was Samurai.
Sumo wrestler was regarded as Samurai even if his original class wasn't
Samurai.

In 19th century, class system was abolished by new government.
Samurai's topknot and having samurai sword were also prohibited.

BUT, Sumo wrestler was an exception.
I mean, Sumo wrestler is the living Samurai still now.
That's why, everyone wanted him to follow the Bushido.

Sumo fan ran out of patience. There is no help for quitting Sumo.

Many Mongolians are having misunderstanding that Japanese people kicked out him with narrow-minded nationalism. But it's fault.
He was self-conceited, and he had never learned different culture.
Do you get angry if Japanese behave ignoring your culture, don't you?

Unfortunately, he couldn't get good person. His personal manager and his
Oyakata (coacher) are stupid (Both are Japanese).
If they led him properly, he would be greatful Sumo wrestler.

come in virtue, get out vice
Feb. 3rd. (the solar calendar) = Mar. 17th (the lunar calendar)
It's Setsubun which is Japanese traditional event.
Feb. 4th is Risshun (the solar calendar) = Mar. 18th (the lunar calendar).
Ancient Japanese people believed that the evil appears in the change of seasons.
From that reason, they throw soy beans as calling "Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi (come in vietue, get out vice)"

Originally, this event was Imperial house's event in Heian period (8 -
12 century).
Since Edo period (17 - 19 century), common people also began this event.

Bodhidharma (Daruma in Japanese) was the Buddhist monk, founder of Zen. He was a South Indian who journeyed to Southern China and subsequently relocated northwards. From that reason, his portrait is described like Caucasian (a clear-cut face).

He was also founder of ZAZEN (gazing wall/facing wall).
"make yourself be a wall and to see 'a nothing' (come to nothing)". I mean "finding a truth in immovable mind like a wall".
Meditation is different from ZAZEN in a strict sense.
Meditation means "close your eyes and image something". On the other hand, a goal of Zazen is "come to nothing".

Talking of Daruma, we're hitting upon his style that he's covering his whole body with a red clothes.
That's why, ancient Japanese had made a Daruma doll (Papier-mache) that emphasized (deformed) Bodhidharma.

This is a lucky mascot. People wish own prayer to Daruma.
At the beginning, Daruma doll has not eyes. If you attained your purpose, you could paint eyes to Daruma.
I listed some antique Buddhism hanging scrolls.
Please take a look.
I recommend Myoshin Jippou Kai.
This is printing about the teachings of ZEN.

If you think that you really want to know all times' Buddha,
you have to know all rules of universe (nature),
and all things are made by your mind.

I think that it's one of fine philosophy rather than a religion.
I think that it's O.K. thinking as only art (whether you have nothing to believe in Buddhism or not).
It means Shinjuku Golden St.
Kabuki-cho and Shinjuku 2 chome where is the Japanese largest amusement center are neighbor of this street.
There are many bars.

This street attracts a man of culture or writer. It's like a salon.
This street shows the scene of good old days (about 50 years before). So this street became famous street in these days.

I heard that many foreign tourists also visit here in these days.

This street was (an illegal) brothel street till the Anti-Prostitution Law were enacted in 1956.
After that, this street was reborn to bars street.
This photo is in front of Akihabara station in Tokyo.
I went to Akihabara after a long time. Akihabara is always crowded.

Akihabara can divide Akiha (Akiba) and Bara (Hara).
Akiha is one of God name, and Hara means field.

In 17th century, Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed to SHOGUN.
And he brought Akiba Daigongen shrine from his hometown to here.
People called this place Akihabara since this event.

Akiba Daigongen is one of god. Akiba Daigongen looks Tengu like black crows.
And he rides on fox.

He is in charge of fire prevention.
In Edo period in Japan, the fire often brought tragedy, because traditionally
wooden buildings are many. So, Shogun brought Akiba Daigongen from his hometown.
From that reason, Akiba daigongen was believed by successive Shogun.

In Edo period, many drugstores gathered.
At present, Akihabara is famous place for PC, electrical appliances, game and anime.

Please take a look my Newly Listed Items
This year, 2010 is Tiger year of twelve zodiacal signs.
I mean, Kokuzo-Bosatsu is in charge of defence for this year.

KOKUZO-BOSATSU is one of a bodhisattva in Buddhism.
Especially, KOKUZO-BOSATSU is believed strongly in Tibet and Japan.

KOKUZO means infinity wisdom and mercy. From that reason, it's believed that Kokuzo brings us knowledge, intelligence and memory.

[Episode on KOKUZO : visiting to KOKUZO at age 13]
It is in the habit of visiting to KOKUZO at age 13 at Horin-ji temple in
Kyoto. For the purpose of getting intelligence and memory from KOKUZO.

There is Togetsu bridge over Katsura river between the town and KOKUZO.
But don't look back when they return to home. If they look back on bridge,
KOKUZO's power fade away.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 219px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qfrXpf2_tX8/Swqtu3vHUAI/AAAAAAAAAAw/_Xq5NT2ZkSE/s320/cnn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407325323358851074" />

Fudoh Myo-Oh who woke up for the first time in 1000 years
Ao-Fudoh which has been closed more than 1000 years is opening to public at Kyoto now. I've seen it at Shoren-in temple in Kyoto.

This Fudoh Myo-Oh was decided to a "Hibutsu" in Heian period. Hibutsu means "It doesn't open to public"
Since that, nobody (even the Emperor) couldn't see this more than 1000 years. Everybody knew the existence, but couldn't see it.

Why do monks made decision to open?
They said that "because Japan is having big economy depression since Lehman's bankruptcy, so we open Fudoh to public and we ask to Fudoh to help us".

umm...
I think that certainly the world have a hard times now.
But I think that Japanese history had had big hard times than now for 1000 years.
Ancient people were devout Buddhists than us. I think that ancient people wanted to meet him strongly.
(Does management of temple get a hard times rather than Japan?, huh? :) )

You can see it till Dec. 20th.

Tori-no-Ichi is traditional festival of Japan.
We wish our business prospers and carry that out.
Perhaps many people would gather to there, because we've have recession.

Kumade (a decorated rake) is sold on this festival.
As it is tool that rake something, this Kumade means that rake together happiness.

When buyer and seller get an agreement, sellers give a traditional clap, Sanbonjime.

The SHOGUN is coming!

In Japan, strong north wind blows around early in November. It's between autumn and winter.
It's the time to ready winter's clothes little by little.

This wind is named "KOGARASHI" which means the wind that let leaves be withered.
When this wind blows, the winter is coming.

And also Japanese people are saying that Fuyu-Shogun ga kita (Shogun of winter is coming).
Fuyu-Shogun means Shogun of the winter. Of course, this Shogun is not human being.
Ancient people have thought that (the top of Samurai) Shogun sent strong troops to us. The winter was the hard season to ancient people.
